Modulation of Wind Ripples by Long Surface Waves via the Air Flow: a Feedback Mechanism
نویسندگان
چکیده
The evolution of a short-wave (SW) spectrum along a long wave (LW) is studied. The evolution of the SW spectrum variation is treated in the relaxation time approximation. The variation of the SW spectrum is caused by the LW orbital velocities and by the variation of the wind stress along the surface of a LW. The latter is due to the distortion of the flow by a LW, and to the variation of the roughness induced by the modulated short waves. This introduces a feedback mechanism: more SWs give rise to a larger roughness, which by increasing the local stress stimulates the growth of more SWs. It is shown that this aerodynamic feedback effect dominates the modulation of the SW spectrum for moderate and strong winds. The feedback mechanism is most effective for SWs in the gravity-capillary range, increasing its dominance with increasing windspeed and decreasing frequency of a LW. The maximum of the SW amplitude modulation is situated at the crest of a LW. The results are in agreement with laboratory and field measurements of the short-wave modulation.

3-D Numerical Investigation of Flow Field in Starting Stage of High Speed Wind Tunnels
High speed wind tunnels are widely used in the study of fluid flow behavior around various objects. The air flow in the starting step of supersonic wind tunnels is transient including strong shock waves caused by the interaction of the tunnel main stream and the boundary layer at walls. To arrive in running step, the tunnel must be designed so as these waves leave immediately the test section. ...

متن کاملA neural mass model of CA1-CA3 neural network and studying sharp wave ripples
We spend one third of our life in sleep. The interesting point about the sleep is that the neurons are not quiescent during sleeping and they show synchronous oscillations at different regions. Especially sharp wave ripples are observed in the hippocampus. Here, we propose a simple phenomenological neural mass model for the CA1-CA3 network of the hippocampus considering the spike frequency adap...

The application of Extreme value analysis method in heat wave hazard climatology; case study in Mid-Southern Iran Abstract Greenhouse warming poses the main cause of atmospheric hazards’ exacerbation and emergence in recent years. Earth planet has been witnessing frequent and severe natural hazards from the distant past; however, global warming has strongly influenced the occurrence of some a...
متن کاملNonlinear Formulation of the Bulk Surface Stress over Breaking Waves: Feedback Mechanisms from Air-flow Separation
Historically, our understanding of the air-sea surface stress has been derived from engineering studies of turbulent flows over flat solid surfaces, and more recently, over rigid complex geometries. Over the ocean however, the presence of a free, deformable, moving surface gives rise to a more complicated drag formulation. In fact, within the constant-stress turbulent atmospheric boundary layer...
